A Message from the Graduate Coordinator

The Department invites students to apply for the Master of Arts program in Philosophy.

Students who pursue an M.A. in Philosophy at U.F. are provided a rigorous and well rounded education with a faculty boasting expertise in core areas of the history of philosophy, metaphysics and epistemology, and ethics and value theory. They will gain skills and knowledge relevant to pursuing advanced degrees in related areas of law, political science, and other disciplines. The Department is committed to a strong M.A. program, providing graduate students with not only an excellent education but a supportive, active community of students, teachers, and scholars. Students admitted with funding are generally provided support for two years, the standard time for completing the M.A.

Students who complete this program are well-placed to pursue a Ph.D. in Philosophy, whether at another institution or here at U.F. At present, however, we cannot admit students into the Ph.D. portion of the program. As you may have heard, during the budget crisis of 2008, the central administration at the University of Florida decided to suspend admissions to a number of Ph.D. programs at U.F., including the Ph.D. program in Philosophy. We are unable at this time to make any confident predictions about when admissions to the Ph.D. may be reopened given the uncertainty about the budget situation at U.F. generally.

Please feel free to contact the Graduate Coordinator if you have questions about the program, how to apply, or anything else related to graduate education in philosophy at the University of Florida.

Dr. Chuang Liu, Graduate Coordinator
