Centralized in Griffin-Floyd Hall...
PhilSoc, University of Florida's Undergraduate Philosophy Society, is dedicated to facilitating philosophical awareness and a forum for discussion and analysis of such for the student population.

PhilSoc now hosts meetings each week on Tuesday evenings. All meetings are held at 6:30 pm in the Philosophy Library, on the third floor of Griffin-Floyd Hall on UF campus, unless stated otherwise.

Next Meeting: Tuesday November 16th at 6:30 PM in the Philosophy Library

Date: November 16th
Topic: Dr. Witmer will talk about a "Godless Morality"
Organizers: Prof. Witmer

Discription: It is undeniable that atheists are widely thought (in America at least) to be immoral or untrustworthy. Part of this reputation stems from a line of thought according to which, if God does not exist, something rather unfortunate follows about morality: the consequence might be that there is no such thing as right or wrong, or that we can't know what is right or wrong, or that morality is relative, or that we don't have any reason to do what is right, and so on. In this talk I focus on these alleged unfortunate consequences, distinguishing them, clarifying them, and arguing that none of these alleged consequences follow. In particular, I spend some time on the frequently heard challenge "What then is the basis for morality?"
